Larnach Castle – A Castle of Dreams, Tragedy and Mystery
Perched high above Dunedin Harbour, Larnach Castle is New Zealand’s very own fairy-tale castle — but behind its magnificent walls lies a story of wealth, ambition, family heartbreak and tragedy. Built in 1871 by businessman William Larnach for his family, this grand Victorian mansion witnessed both extraordinary luxury and devastating sorrow. In 1898, Larnach’s own life ended in tragedy, leaving behind a legacy as fascinating as the castle itself. Rescued from neglect and lovingly restored, Larnach Castle stands proudly today, filled with history, beauty and whispers of a dramatic past.
But look beyond the grand staircase and spectacular views, and you’ll discover a story that proves truth can be far more captivating than fiction.
